This morning I read Hebrews 12:1-2 in my devotions, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a screwed up, broken mess. I certainly don’t have it all together. But it is a sweet comfort to remember that I am not alone in this journey through life, this divine race.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed and depressed in the midst of the icky bits of the journey: the death, and the breakups, and the shattered relationships, and the loneliness, and the sickness.
You feel like you’re alone, unseen, and without a voice. But you’re not. As John Donne wrote, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.”
We are held secure in the hands of a changeless Savior, surrounded by a multitude, an inconceivable body of fellow pilgrims. You are seen, cheered on, heard. You are precious.
It’s difficult to embrace the journey through life. Perhaps because it’s so messy. Or difficult. Or painful. Or because no two people have the same journey. Or a host of other reasons. But the truth is, until we embrace this journey, this here, this now, we can never truly experience the joy that comes from the journey.
So wherever you are tonight, be fully there. Embrace your imperfect life with abandon. We may not know what tomorrow brings, but that’s ok. Excitement is the spice of life, right?
May you find joy wherever you are, whatever the situation. In bear hugs from a toddler, or reading books in a blanket fort, or kittens, or a new book, or laughing your heart out while watching Friends, or countless other ways.
#EmbraceTheJourney, my friends!
