I remember the first time I saw a copy of Kisses From Katie; it was in a Christian Book Distributors catalog my family and I routinely get through the mail.
For some reason, as I flipped through the pages, my eyes landed on the cover and my heart was touched. Now I’m not one who usually judges a book by its cover.
Maybe that is why it took two years for me to finally come across a copy of Kisses From Katie at my local library. And there, in the midst of the novels and inspirational titles I brought home, was a story of love, redemption, and growth.
In Kisses From Katie, I met a girl who never imagined that she would live in Uganda, or that she would be a young, unwed mother to more than a dozen children, or that she would be a missionary.
Yet when God wrecked her life, she left it behind. Or in the words of Katie Davis, she “quit” it.
The story of Katie Davis is the story of a young woman who was called by God, not to follow the high and lofty dreams of her own heart, but to obey, to go, to serve.
When I read Katie’s story, I cried.
Not because it was depressing, but because it was encouraging, beautiful, inspiring. Because I want to be like Katie Davis.
But really, I just want to be the hands and feet of Christ.
That doesn’t mean I’m leaving for Africa, or that I’m making plans to be a vocational missionary, or that I’m adopting children from across the globe. What I learned in Kisses From Katie, was that no matter where I am, God has me here for His glory. And wherever I am, there are people I can serve.
My “Africa” is across the street and down the road, when I take the time to show others I care deeply.
That is why when a friend asked me, right before my twenty-first birthday if I had read Kisses From Katie, I answered yes. And when she asked, “Wasn’t it life-changing?”, I nodded, because it was the best book I read in 2013. I would give Kisses From Katie an “A+”.
I would like to share with you a snippet of Kisses From Katie:
“Remember, God will never give you more than you can handle.”
People repeat this frequently; I heard it when I was growing up and I hear it now. It is meant to be a source of encouragement, and it would be if I believed it were true.
But I don’t.
I believe that God totally, absolutely, intentionally gives us more than we can handle. Because this is when we surrender to Him and He takes over, proving Himself by doing the impossible in our lives.

I believe that God uses me in small ways, he moves me to encourage or fill a need when he shows it to me. My biggest assignment that He has given me is that of wife, mother and grandmother, I pray daily for Him to use me to encourage those in my life who need Him.
